Intelligent Storage Element Overview

Intelligent Storage Element technology is the result of nearly one million man-hours of development by the Advanced Storage Architecture group of Seagate Technology, LLC. Xiotech acquired this revolutionary technology in 2007 and has incorporated it into its Emprise family of storage solutions.
 

Inside the ISE
Each ISE is an integrated environment of:

• Single or dual sealed DataPacs, each with up to 8 terabytes of storage capacity
• Dual Managed Reliability Controllers, which locally manage cache, data protection processes, and more
• Dual power and cooling units
• Dual battery modules

ISE Innovations
The ISE includes all new code for improved performance, advanced heal-in-place capabilities, and improved system telemetry. Additionally, the ISE features physical innovations such as vibration reduction; improved cooling; and increased reliability for the backplane, connectors, power supplies, and fans.

 

Unmatched Reliability

The ISE's patented technology provides more than 100 times the reliability of regular disk drives. With no drives to replace, you save valuable time and eliminate the risk of associated data loss. It also saves you considerable money, as disk replacements comprise a large portion of most vendors' maintenance agreements.

Preventive Technology to Minimize Failures

• Reduced heat and vibration significantly extend the life of each DataPac.
• Reconditioning and error-detection processes locate and fix potential problems before failure occurs.

Flexible Scalability

In a single manageable element, an ISE provides the capacity of 20 to 40 disk drives, plus processing power and cache. This makes it easy to scale storage capacity up to one petabyte within a single system, avoiding performance bottlenecks or the headaches of managing thousands of discreet storage elements.

When you want more capacity or performance, simply add ISEs to your system. You can even use an Emprise 5000 system as a foundation for an Emprise 7000 SAN solution-enabling you to grow without losing your storage investment.

Flexible Configuration and Scale
DataPac options enable you to customize the ISE for your organization's needs. You may choose from:

• Performance tier for transactional applications, such as Oracle Database or Microsoft SQL Server.
